Hiking at the Fells

It’s been a beautiful fall weekend in Boston!  Yesterday, my Sister, my Mom, and I headed out to the Middlesex Fells for a hike. The Fells runs through Malden, Medford, Stoneham, Melrose, and Winchester, and is only about 5 miles from my apartment.  It’s a great, easy getaway from the city.  There are a number of trails that go around a reservoir and Spot Pond, and they are great for running, hiking, mountain biking, and dog walking.

We started out at the Sheepfold parking area, which is right off of route 28, and set out for a 5.2 mile loop on the Reservoir Trail (orange markers).  It is a moderately difficult hike in terms of footing, and there are a few ups and downs, but it is hike that anyone could complete if you are up for a couple hours on the trail.  As the name implies, the trail goes around the reservoir and  there are some nice views along the way.   We got a little lost at the beginning (they were re-routing due to some work being done on the trail), so we ended up completing about 6 miles in 2.5 hours.

I’ve gone on a few trail runs in the Fells as well, and it is a great place to run!  The leaves and storm debris made the footing a little more difficult this weekend, but generally it is pretty easy to navigate.    If you are looking for a break from busy city life, this is a great place to visit!
